Dear Claudia,
Rome is such a beautiful city! I'm so glad I moved here! Today I went to the great Coliseum. It was huge! There was a gladiator, a slave, and another gladiator fighting each other for their lives. It was SO exciting and bloody! On the way home I stopped by the Forum, a large open and very crowded, market place. My slave and I bought some food for supper and some new clothes for public outings. I went into a temple there, and met a girl I would love to be friends with, her name is Fabia. She invited me to her house to get to know each other better. Good thing I got new clothes! I went to her home an hour after sundown and was enchanted by her house! It even had its own aqueduct, only the wealthy have those! Aqueducts are pipes that bring water to houses from the main reservoir. The one story house was built around an impluvium, a hole in the floor that collects water that falls through the open ceiling and then collects in the well like hole. Outside was a beautiful garden and a very nice mosaic on the wall. The next day I decided I needed to be cleansed, so I went to the bathhouses. The baths were huge! I first went into the hot room, it felt wonderful to talk and get to know others. I think its so cool how they heat the hot room! They first heat the water then run it through pipes in the floor of the hot room to heat the baths. So creative! On the walk home I realized that the whole city was really just a simple grid pattern. The streets were dividing up the houses and buildings creating blocks! I walked home safely on the sidewalk that keeps us separated from street, which has a curb. I needed to cross the busy street full of carts clanging on the stones, so I simply walked across the speed bump stones, like everyone else. I love it here in Rome and I hope you can come visit me and my new friend soon!
Sincerely,
Valeria
